Cherry blossoms and fresh green
Karuizawa’s cherry blossoms begin to bloom at the end of April, showering you in the beautiful, pink tufts iconic to Japanese culture. Immerse yourself in this seasons excuisite flowers such as Kobushi magnolia, bayberries and peach blossoms, and feed your soul with the songs of wild birds and the refreshing spring breeze.
Onioshidashien
A park filled with solidified lava from the erruption of Mt. Asama in 1783. Weathering has since formed the rocks into some intriguing formations, making it one of the best spots in Japan to witness the threat of nature. You can also find M.t Asama Kannondo (a temple dedicated to the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy Kannon) here.
Mt.Asama
This active, complex volcano, complete with craters and calderas is said to be a symbol of Karuizawa. One of Japan’s one hundred most famous mountains, this 2,569 metre tall masterpiece is a playground for avid climbers and hikers, particularly during the high season.
Kumobaike Pond
This pond, sometimes called “Swan Lake” because the swans tend to fly in winter, has stunning, changeable scenery throughout all four seasons. Take a stroll around the pond and relax among the nature. A trip around the whole pond should take about twenty minutes.
Shiraitonotaki Falls
A waterfall seventy metres wide and three metres high. The name comes from the way the water drops to resemble white threads, like a pure veil between the contrasting green trees. It is a tourist attraction that is representative of Karuizawa.
Karuizawa National Wild Bird Sanctuary Forest
Gaze upon a selection of the 81 kinds of wild birds you can see here annually. Discover wild animals such as the Ursus thibetanus and Japanese Serow that live here on a nature tour.
