Karuizawa, an international sports town

Karuizawa is the only Olympic town for both seasons in the world

Karuizawa is the only town in the world to have hosted both Summer and Winter Olympic events. Karuizawa hosted equestrian events in the Tokyo 1964 Summer Olympics, as well as curling in the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics. In addition, Karuizawa has a large background as the host town of international sports conventions such as the Olympic games as well as international championships of curling, golf, tennis and more. It is not too much to say that Karuizawa is truly a sports town.

Around the Ice Arena, curling’s Olympic venue, the Karuizawa Kazekoshi Park has become a popular spot for tourists to enjoy not only the Ice Arena, but also its “ice park” and a comprehensive sports facility where you can enjoy various sports such as, tennis and swimming. Inside the Kazakoshi Park, you can see two side-by-side cauldrons standing in commemoration of the Summer and Winter Olympics.

There is also the Karuizawamachi Botanical Garden in the premises of the park, and you can enjoy 1600 kinds of plant exhibits native to Karuizawa there.
